Cueva del Indio, Arecibo

Cliffside caves, crashing waves, and ancient Taíno carvings on Puerto Rico’s north coast.

Cueva del Indio is one of the most unique coastal spots in Puerto Rico, located in Arecibo along the north coast. Known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, crashing Atlantic waves, and ancient Taíno petroglyphs carved into the rock, it’s a mix of history, adventure, and raw natural beauty.

The area features a series of caves and coastal openings where you can explore, take photos, and walk along the cliff edges with panoramic ocean views.

What to Expect

This isn’t a typical beach stop. You’ll be walking along rugged cliffs, climbing into narrow cave openings, and exploring a stretch of coastline shaped by constant Atlantic waves.

Expect uneven terrain, rocky paths, and strong ocean conditions. This is not a traditional beach — it’s more of an exploration spot where you’ll walk along cliffs, climb into caves, and take in the views.

The waves here can be powerful, especially during high surf, so always stay aware of your surroundings.

Why it's special

  • Ancient Taíno petroglyphs carved into rock

  • Dramatic cliffs, blowholes, and crashing surf

  • Natural caves and hidden openings

  • One of the most photogenic spots on the island

Tips

  • Wear sneakers/hiking boots— there are many jagged edged rocks, certain areas can be slippery as well

  • Be cautious near cliff edges

  • Not ideal for swimming

  • Go early or late to avoid the extreme heat

  • Bring water, snacks, lots of sunscreen — no facilities

Pro Tip

The main caves are as far west as you can go on the rocks.  Follow the trail. Walk a little farther than most people. Some of the best cave views and photo spots are just beyond the entrance by the eastern public parking (limited spots). There is also free roadside, public parking at the western entrance. This involves a short beach hike and a moderate cliffside climb up to the top of the cave. Otherwise, you pay $10 a head to park your car. Yes, that's individual pricing per head and no, you can't drop people (even elderly) off to enter thru the main gate unless they pay.
