Mar Chiquita, Manatí
A natural rock-framed cove with calm waters, dramatic views, and one of Puerto Rico’s most unique beach experiences.

Mar Chiquita is one of Puerto Rico’s most iconic and visually striking beaches, located in Manati along the north coast. Unlike typical open beaches, Mar Chiquita is a naturally formed cove enclosed by limestone rock walls, creating a protected pool where waves crash dramatically through a narrow opening in the rocks.
The result is a mix of calm, swimmable water and powerful ocean energy just beyond the barrier. It’s a favorite for both locals and visitors looking for something different — a place where you can relax, explore the rocks, and take in one of the most unique coastal landscapes on the island.
What to Expect
This isn’t your typical long sandy beach — Mar Chiquita is all about the natural formation. You’ll walk down a short path to a semi-enclosed cove, with waves pushing in through the rock opening and circulating through the pool.
On calmer days, the water inside the cove is great for swimming and floating. When the surf is up, the waves can crash hard against the rocks and surge into the cove, creating strong currents and changing conditions quickly.
Expect a mix of sand, rock, and some uneven footing near the edges. Similar to nearby Cueva del Indio, the views from the cliffs above are just as worth it as the beach itself. Best visited in the morning for calmer conditions and fewer crowds.

Pro Tip
The best views aren’t just from the beach — walk up along the rocks on either side of the cove for a higher vantage point.
Get there between 8–9am and you’ll most likely have much of the beach to yourself. Parking is free, and the surrounding area near the beach is all open for parking.
Crowds change throughout the day — afternoons tend to bring more of a party vibe (expect some reggaeton), while mornings are much more quiet and relaxed.
If the water looks rough, don’t push it — this is a spot to respect.
